"Any idea when you're chatting with the band?" a message arrives. "I was hoping to ask if I can join as their fourth member."

There's just a key snag: I also longs to be Haim's additional sibling. And we're far from alone. Multiple celebrated admirers have openly begged for the position.

One thing is obvious something is going on. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana started their career playing gigs at neighborhood delis with their family. Today, they are multiple Grammy Award nominees.

Like all the best groups, they're a close gang. Their videos repeatedly feature them striding in harmony down the streets of Los Angeles. During performances, they perform with such pure exuberance you can't help but think, "I'd love to be part of that, too."

"How often on tour that young girls came up to us and said, 'Watching you live, I got a drum kit'," says Alana, the most junior of the Haim siblings. "It is the ultimate compliment. That is recognition in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can encourage young girls to start a band."

"Therefore anyone are welcome to be the next member of Haim."

Award Recognition

The group have called into home, where they're recovering after an lengthy tour in for their latest album, I Quit.

They're presently processing the news it's been shortlisted for Best Rock Album at the Grammys – with Haim the very first female band ever in consideration for the prize.

"I tune into the nominations every year, so it kind of feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is called," explains Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this right or am I dreaming'?"

The significance of the nomination resonates with the band.

"We truly set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a significant step," adds Alana. "But we're just thankful for the pioneers that paved the way."

Emotional Upheaval and Laughter

The album emerged from a time of emotional upheaval. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music explores that strange transitional period where you're glad to be free, but not yet ready to move on.

The lyrics detail endings and goodbyes. The sisters want love, but not the relationships they've got. You can hear them figuring out in real time who they are becoming.

"I adore way of putting it, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is like a slogan. You have to consciously practice blocking the outside opinions and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Refinement of Sound

That recent confidence called for a different sonic direction – more raw and direct than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that began with the percussion.

"The drum sound is such a specific thing, and I care so much about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our biography," jokes Alana. "I always say, our albums cannot begin until we find the perfect drum sound."

Anecdotes and Collective Laughter

The trio's candor inspired the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters revealed some of their dating horror stories.

A former partner broke up with Este over a health consideration. Alana recalled a story of travelling to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"Experiencing these breakups, you just feel like there's no light," explains Alana. "Therefore to be able to share those stories and have them tell you even crazier stories, it's therapeutic."

A Secure Future

One can easily sense a change in the band. Now, Haim are more confident of their standing in the music world.

They're top-billed acts, with chart-topping albums and an international fan base.

But Haim will forever be their number one focus.

"We have been playing music since I was four," concludes Alana. "There is nothing else that we were supposed to do. And I'm really thankful we've gotten here and we're still going strong."
