A deadly train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the speed and handling of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The disaster occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link built to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this incident,” stated the country's president.
The official confirmed that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The official added plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the previous administration, whose presidency ended the year before. This project was a hallmark of his leadership's developmental agenda for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Worries
The development of both railway systems was managed by the army, marking a significant expansion of its role in civilian projects. They were executed at an fast-tracked pace, defying predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently sparked significant questions over safety standards.
- Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an earlier crash this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the disaster, the chief of a primary political opposition demanded an prompt pause in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This pause was suggested pending a full independent investigation. The party declared that the loss of life "demands prompt explanations."
In response, the national leader asserted that the train had been running in complete adherence to all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and management of these strategic initiatives.
