Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Remarks

England opening batter Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of comments made by skipper Ben Stokes about the dressing room not being "weak men".

The all-rounder made this message in several conversations following his team's loss in the second Ashes against Australia earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where the visitors now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, the captain noted he had allowed his sentiment to "drift around" among the squad.

"I have completed the necessary discussions over the past two days that I required," remarked the England leader.

But, following Crawley made a knock of 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the press with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

Stokes made the "fragile individuals" comment subsequent to his side were beaten in the second Test to fall two matches behind.

The team subsequently went on a break to Noosa between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Before this match, he revealed his team had held "raw" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to stay in contention in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman stated the guidance from the captain and head coach McCullum had remained consistent with their previous tenure in charge.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, unchanged," noted the opener. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with lots of freedom. It felt like we were capable of something special going into this game."

Australia Close of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's wicket late on Saturday came during a crucial triple-strike by Australia spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Stokes himself – left the chasing side six down for 207 chasing a daunting target of 435 runs.

This means, Australia need four wickets on Sunday's final day to secure an unassailable three-nil lead with three Tests.

Defeat will extend England's winless run in this country to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth straight overseas Ashes series defeat.

The current battle will be completed in just 11 days of cricket – after England fell the first two Tests in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when the Australians completed victory in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been determined so quickly. The hosts have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disappointing," admitted the batsman. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There remains plenty to play for and we will definitely view it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"It's been tough. They're a formidable team. It was inevitably hard coming here against them. They entered as the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

Although Crawley's innings in the third Test likely secures doubts about his short-term future in the side, Pope looks under threat for his spot in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

Pope was out for 17 in the team's second innings on day four, extending his poor record against the old enemy.

Across 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has failed to score a half-century and averages 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top order in the Ashes and returned a lower average.

But, Crawley insisted any suggestion his teammate is being scrutinised comes from "you guys" – meaning the press – "not inside the camp."

"We all know how good of a player he is," added he. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. This is noise from the outside. There is no discussion of that nature on Ollie in the camp," he concluded.
