The McLaren driver edged out team-mate and title rival Oscar Piastri for the quickest lap in the dying seconds of practice at the Brazilian Grand Prix. Norris, who seized the title advantage from Piastri by one point after winning in the Mexican Grand Prix a fortnight back, beat the Melbourne-born driver by a tiny margin of 0.023secs. Earlier in the session, Piastri had been the fastest McLaren driver for most of the session before sprint qualifying set to begin at the evening session. Max Verstappen, the sole remaining contender in realistic title contention, lying with a 36-point deficit behind Norris, was classified in 17th place as his Red Bull team opted for a different programme. His teammate Yuki Tsunoda was the sole competitor to crash, though minor, when he spun at Turn Four soon after starting. The Japanese spun out over the exit kerbs before rotating through the gravel trap, and was lucky to avoid just a minor contact of the wall. The Ferrari of the seven-time champion also lost it, at the final moments of the practice, spinning around through the fast downhill Mergulho turn approaching the last turn on to the start-finish straight. The veteran ended the session in 19th place, one place behind teammate the Monegasque driver. The McLaren drivers were significantly quicker of the remaining drivers, with Nico Hulkenberg's car third fastest, over half a second behind the Australian's time. The Aston Martin of the Spanish driver was in fourth, with Sauber's Gabriel Bortoleto fifth from the Mercedes of Russell and Alpine's Gasly and Williams' Sainz.
