White House Announces Federal Worker Layoffs as Funding Gap Nears Three-Week Mark

The White House confirmed the start of government employee terminations on Friday, following through on prior threats in response to the ongoing US government shutdown, which is set to extend into its third consecutive week.

Formal Statement and Early Information

Russell Vought wrote on a public platform that “RIFs have begun,” indicating the government’s procedure for terminating staff.

Although the official did not specify which departments were affected, a representative from the Treasury Department stated that layoff warnings had been distributed within that department. Furthermore, a DHS spokesperson noted that staff reductions would also occur at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Also, a union representing federal workers confirmed that members at the Education Department would be impacted by the reduction in force.

Labor Reaction and Legal Challenges

Labor representatives warned that the terminations would have “severe consequences” on public services used by the public and pledged to contest the moves in the legal system.

This is shameful that the government has used the funding lapse as an pretext to illegally fire thousands of workers who deliver essential functions to communities nationwide,” said Everett Kelley, who leads the American Federation of Government Employees.

The AFL-CIO reacted to the news, declaring, “America’s unions will see you in court.”

Political Standoff and Budget Dispute

Lawmakers from the Democratic party have declined to vote for a GOP-supported legislation to restore funding unless it includes healthcare-centered concessions. Following repeated failed attempts, the GOP leadership in the Senate have adjourned the Senate until next Tuesday, indicating the deadlock is unlikely to be ended soon.

At a media briefing, the GOP leader in the House, Mike Johnson, criticized opposition lawmakers for not supporting the Republican proposal, which was approved in the lower chamber on a near party-line vote.

Federal workers’ final pay that 700,000 federal workers will see until Washington Democrats decide to fulfill their duties and end the shutdown,” Johnson stated. Beginning shortly, American service members, many of whom live on tight budgets, are going to miss a complete payment.”

Legal and Operational Constraints

Last week, unions filed for a court injunction to block the government from carrying out any reductions in force during the funding gap. Moreover, a federal judge ordered the administration to provide specifics on layoff plans, impacted departments, and whether any federal employees had been recalled to carry out layoffs.

An analysis contended that a government shutdown restricts the ability of the government to conduct terminations, referencing guidance that acknowledged any long-term staff cuts need to have been started prior to the funding expired.

Impact on Workers

These terminations occurred on the same day that federal workers got only a partial paycheck for the final days of the previous month but not the beginning of the current month, since appropriations lapsed at the start of the month.

Max Stier, the president of the non-profit Partnership for Public Service, condemned the gridlock’s impact on federal employees.

This is unjust to make federal employees bear the burden because our leaders in the legislature and the White House have failed to keep our federal operations open and operational,” Stier stated. The air traffic controllers, veterans’ healthcare providers, smoke jumpers and safety officials are not at fault for this government shutdown.”

The irony is that lawmakers and top administration officials are still receiving salaries during the funding gap.
